Dr. Jacob De Hoyos

Pianist · Educator · Performer

I’m Dr. Jacob De Hoyos, a pianist and educator based in New York City, where I serve as Professor of Piano at the University of Mount Saint Vincent. I previously served as Piano Department Chair at Concordia Conservatory. I earned my Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music from Stony Brook University, where I was awarded both a Teaching Assistantship and scholarship, and I hold a Bachelor of Music and Pedagogy Certificate from Texas Tech University.

I began my piano studies at the age of 15, which gives me a unique perspective and deep empathy for students starting their musical journey at any stage of life. I am committed to creating an encouraging and engaging environment where students feel supported in their growth—whether they are beginners or advanced musicians preparing for auditions and competitions.

My teaching emphasizes a strong foundation in technique, expressive interpretation, and a deep understanding of musical structure and style. Each lesson is tailored to the individual, with the goal of developing not only musical skill, but also confidence, creativity, and a lasting connection to music.

Alongside teaching, I maintain an active performing career. I have performed Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3 as a soloist with the Texas Tech Symphony and appeared as a chamber musician at venues including Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. I have received recognition in national competitions, including second place at the Bradshaw & Buono International Piano Competition and the MTNA New Mexico Competition, and first prize at the Texas Tech Concerto Competition.

Whether you are beginning your musical journey or refining your artistry, I am dedicated to guiding each student with clarity, structure, and a genuine belief in the transformative power of music.

My work as an educator is centered on guiding each student with clarity, structure, and musical sensitivity. Lessons are tailored to individual goals, supporting both technical development and expressive growth.

Beyond the Studio

Outside of music, I’m also an avid baker. I created Baking With The Classics, an interdisciplinary experience that brings together music, history, and bakes, as interconnected expression of culture. Through this series, I love exploring how music and flavor can come together to tell a story and create memorable experiences for audiences.
