ABOUT ME + MY EXPERIENCE

I’m Dr. Jacob De Hoyos, a pianist and educator based in New York City, where I serve as the Piano Department Chair at Concordia Conservatory and Professor of Piano at the College of Mount Saint Vincent. I earned my Doctor of Musical Arts (D.M.A.) and Master of Music (M.M.) from Stony Brook University, where I was awarded both a Teaching Assistantship and a scholarship, and I hold a Bachelor of Music (B.M.) and Pedagogy Certificate from Texas Tech University.

I began my piano studies at the age of 15, which gives me a unique perspective and deep empathy for students who are starting their musical journey at any stage of life. I’m passionate about creating an encouraging and engaging learning environment where students feel supported in their growth—whether they are young beginners or advanced musicians preparing for competitions or college auditions.

My teaching emphasizes a strong foundation in technique, expressive interpretation, and a deep understanding of musical structure and style. I tailor each lesson to the individual student, with the goal of building not only musical skill, but also confidence, creativity, and a lifelong love of music.

In addition to teaching, I maintain an active performing career. I’ve had the privilege of performing as a soloist with the Texas Tech Symphony and as a chamber musician at venues including Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. I’ve received recognition from several national competitions, including second place at the Bradshaw & Buono International Piano Competition and the MTNA New Mexico Competition, and first prize at the Texas Tech Concerto Competition.

Outside of music, I’m also an avid baker. I created Baking With The Classics, a concert series that pairs classical piano performances with desserts I design to reflect the music on the program. Through this series, I love exploring how music and flavor can come together to tell a story and create memorable experiences for audiences.

Whether you're just discovering the piano or seeking to refine your artistry, I’m committed to guiding you with dedication, expertise, and a genuine love for the transformative power of music.
